School district tax rates fell in all 30 big Texas counties from 2021 to 2025 - by $0.06 to $0.29 per $100
The median school-district (ISD) property tax rate is lower in 2025 than in 2021 in all 30 large Texas counties we track, by $0.06 (Williamson) to $0.29 (Smith) per $100 of taxable value. In 2025 the county medians ranged from $0.9452 (Midland) to $1.2072 (Collin). These are rates, not tax bills.

As of October 18, 2026, the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts has published the property tax rates adopted by local governments for 2025. We compared the school-district (ISD) rates in 30 large Texas counties with the same counties in 2021. This is about rates, not about what any household paid.

Median school-district rate, per $100 of taxable value

County School districts 2021 2025 Change
Harris 25 $1.3152 $1.0669 −$0.2483
Collin 22 $1.4344 $1.2072 −$0.2272
Tarrant 21 $1.3440 $1.1469 −$0.1971
Bexar 17 $1.2700 $1.0748 −$0.1952
Dallas 16 $1.2835 $1.1054 −$0.1781
Travis 15 $1.2020 $1.0397 −$0.1623
  • In all 30 counties the 2025 median is lower than the 2021 median. The change ranged from −$0.2875 (Smith) to −$0.0568 (Williamson); the median change was −$0.1775.
  • Over the last year, the picture is mixed: from 2024 to 2025 the median fell in 15 counties, rose in 11 and was unchanged in 4.
  • County government rates range from $0.1214 in Midland County to $0.824 in Fort Bend County; the median of the 30 county rates is $0.3311.
  • Counties with few school districts rest on few numbers: Midland's 2025 median of $0.9452, the lowest, is from only 2 districts, and Ector has 1. The count is in the dataset.
  • The data does not say why rates changed, and a lower rate does not mean a lower bill: a bill also depends on the taxable value of the home, which can rise.

The full table, with every school district and city, is in our Texas property tax rates dataset. Each county also has its own page, for example Harris County or Dallas County.

How to use a rate

A rate of $1.0669 per $100 means $1,066.90 of tax per $100,000 of taxable value for that school district alone. A home is also taxed by the county, by its city if it is inside one, and often by special districts such as hospital, flood control or municipal utility districts, which are not in this table. Taxable value is the appraised value minus exemptions such as the school homestead exemption. Find your own units on your appraisal notice.

Questions

What is the property tax rate in Texas?

There is no single rate. Each county, school district, city and special district sets its own. For 2025, the median school-district rate in 30 large counties ranged from $0.9452 (Midland County) to $1.2072 (Collin County) per $100 of taxable value, and county rates from $0.1214 (Midland) to $0.824 (Fort Bend).

How do I turn a property tax rate into dollars?

Multiply the rate by the taxable value and divide by 100. A rate of $1.0669 per $100 on $300,000 of taxable value is $3,200.70 a year for that one unit. Add the rates of every unit that taxes the home. Taxable value is lower than market value after exemptions.

Is this my property tax bill?

No. A bill uses your home's taxable value and every unit that taxes it, including special districts that are not in our table. Use your appraisal notice or your county appraisal district's website for your own numbers.
