EV charging cost on Texas electricity plans

Updated Oct 9, 2026
Power to Choose data imported · refreshed daily
As of Oct 9, 2026, charging one of 15 model-year 2025 electric vehicles 1,000 miles a month at home adds 246–494 kWh a month to a Texas electricity bill (EPA figures from fueleconomy.gov, measured at the wall). For the example vehicle, a 2025 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD (288 kWh a month), the EV adds about $30.88–$33.98 a month (3.1–3.4¢ per mile) on the lowest-cost fixed-rate plan without a bill credit or minimum-usage fee in each of the 6 utilities. On the lowest-cost plan overall in 5 of 6 utilities — a bill-credit plan — the estimate is lower with the EV than without, because the extra kWh reach the plan’s credit threshold in more months; that is the credit, not free charging. Our estimates for a home averaging 1,000 kWh a month on a typical Texas seasonal pattern, Power to Choose prices with delivery charges, before taxes. Time-of-use plans are priced separately below. “EV charging” = the plan’s 12-month estimate with the EV minus the same plan without the EV. On bill-credit plans this can be zero or negative: the EV’s extra kWh push more months over the credit threshold, so the plan’s credit is paid in more months. That is the credit, not free charging — the same household might pay less on another plan without the EV. Plans without a bill credit or minimum-usage fee show the plain cost of the extra kWh.

Home averaging 1,000 kWh a month (seasonal) plus 288 kWh a month for the EV (1,000 miles). Data as of Oct 9, 2026; estimates before taxes, not offers.

How we calculate

Frequently asked questions

How much electricity does an EV add to a Texas home bill?

Driving 1,000 miles a month adds 246–494 kWh a month for the 15 model-year 2025 EVs we list (EPA combined figures from fueleconomy.gov, measured at the wall, so charging losses are included). The formula is miles × kWh per mile; for 500 miles a month, halve it.

How much does it cost to charge an EV at home in Texas?

As of Oct 9, 2026, for a 2025 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD driven 1,000 miles a month (288 kWh), about $30.88–$33.98 a month (3.1–3.4¢ per mile) on the lowest-cost fixed-rate plan without a bill credit or minimum-usage fee in each of the 6 utilities. This is the plan’s 12-month estimate with the EV minus without it, for a home averaging 1,000 kWh a month, before taxes. Across all 15 vehicles the range is $26.36–$58.29 a month.

Why can adding an EV lower the estimate on some plans?

Bill-credit plans subtract a fixed credit in months when usage is above a threshold (often 1,000 kWh). A home that misses the threshold in mild months may reach it once EV charging is added, so the credit is paid in more months and the 12-month total can go down. The extra electricity is not free: the credit just applies more often. We show the difference on the same plan, with and without the EV, and the plain cost on plans without bill credits.

Are free-nights or time-of-use plans better for EV charging?

They can be, if most charging happens in their cheaper hours, and we estimate them separately in the time-of-use table above (not in the ranking), for the plans whose free hours are clearly stated in their Electricity Facts Label. On Oct 9, 2026, 26 of 47 time-of-use plans in the 6 utilities could be estimated.

Where do the vehicle figures come from?

From fueleconomy.gov, run by the U.S. Department of Energy with EPA data: the combined electricity consumption (kWh per 100 miles) for each model-year 2025 vehicle, retrieved Oct 9, 2026. Each vehicle row links to its fueleconomy.gov page.
