Moving in Texas: how to plan your electricity for move-out and move-in

When you move in Texas, tell your current provider your move-out date and a forwarding address, and order service at the new home as a "move-in" a week or more ahead. Under PUCT rules your contract covers only the address in it, so you usually owe no early-termination fee for moving if you give a forwarding address and, if asked, reasonable proof of the move. Check whether the new address has a different utility or no retail choice at all before you shop.

Early termination fees on Texas electricity plans: how they work and when leaving pays

Most Texas fixed-rate plans of 12 months or more charge an early-termination fee, either a flat amount such as $150 or a set amount per remaining month such as $20. Leaving early pays only when what you save over the remaining months is larger than the fee, so multiply the monthly saving by the months left, adjusting for the season, and compare. Some cases carry no fee at all, such as moving or the last 14 days of the contract.

What happens when your Texas electricity contract ends

When a fixed-rate electricity contract in Texas ends and you do nothing, your provider usually moves you to a month-to-month default rate that can change and is often higher than new fixed offers. Under PUCT rules you can usually switch in the last 14 days before the contract's end date without an early-termination fee, so that window is a good time to choose your next plan. Check your contract for the exact dates.

How bill credits work on Texas electricity plans (and the 999 kWh cliff)

A bill-credit plan takes a fixed dollar amount off your bill only in months when your usage reaches a threshold, usually 1,000 kWh. Miss it by a single kWh and you pay the full bill, so a plan that looks cheapest at exactly 1,000 kWh can cost more over a year. Check the credit terms in the Electricity Facts Label before you sign.
