Method

Every day after the Power to Choose import, we save a record of every active listing: its prices, term, fees and, for plans in the default ranking, its estimated 12-month cost. Records are never overwritten by later days, so changes over time can be measured. The 12-month cost uses our published method: the plan’s 12 monthly bills for a home using 12,000 kWh a year in a typical Texas seasonal pattern, with bill credits applied only in months whose usage qualifies; taxes not included. How it works →

The monthly edition will compare each month with the one before, starting with October 2026 in early November 2026. For official long-run statistics, see electricity prices vs inflation (BLS and EIA). Electricity prices vs inflation →

Frequently asked questions

What is the Texas Real Rate Index?

A daily record, by utility, of what the plans on Power to Choose would cost a typical Texas home over 12 months — not just their advertised 1,000 kWh price. It uses the same estimate as our plan rankings.

Why is there no history before October 2026?

Daily tracking began Oct 9, 2026. We do not estimate or fill in earlier days.
